We have chosen to use Identity-First Language for our virtual and printed materials.
Below are links to multiple sources that explain why some people choose to use identity-first language, and why others choose to use person-first language.
If you are autistic and aren't sure what you prefer, we encourage you to investigate all of the below sources and make the choice that feels the best for you. You can always change your mind later. Feel free to refer other people to this page for information if it helps you to explain your choice.
If you have an autistic child, we encourage you to investigate the below sources, and then
ask the autistic people in your life what terms they prefer for you to use.
Additionally, the links and statement regarding freedom of expression are from the "Identity First Language" section of the Autism Self Advocacy Network's page under "Resources", which you can find linked below.
A NOTE: we believe in the freedom of expression and do not believe in the censorship of people that hold different beliefs than us, understanding that there are places and platforms that are more appropriate than others for complete, full expression of some beliefs. These links below are not to be construed as endorsement or acceptance of the ideas and opinions expressed therein.
